How to Read Today’s NHL Betting Odds

Hockey betting works differently than basketball or football. To find value in the NHL odds, you need to understand the three primary markets displayed on this page:

  • The Moneyline: The most common way to bet on hockey. Simply pick who will win the game. Note that NHL moneylines include Overtime and Shootouts unless specified as “Regulation Only” (3-Way).

  • The Puck Line: This is hockey’s version of the point spread. The favorite is almost always set at -1.5 goals, meaning they must win by 2 or more. The underdog is +1.5 goals, meaning they can lose by 1 goal (or win) for your bet to cash.

  • The Total (Over/Under): The combined score of both teams. Most NHL totals are set at 5.5, 6.0, or 6.5 goals.

Key Factors in NHL Line Movement

Why do NHL lines change throughout the day?

  1. Starting Goalies: This is the single most important variable. If a team announces they are resting their starter for a backup goalie, the odds will shift drastically. Always verify “Confirmed Starters” before placing a wager.

  2. Schedule Spots: Teams playing on the second night of a “back-to-back” often have tired legs, making them prime targets for the opponent.
