How to Read NFL Betting Lines

Football betting relies heavily on the “Point Spread.” To make smarter wagers, you need to understand the three main markets shown on this page:

  • The Point Spread: The great equalizer. If the Chiefs are -7.0, they must win by 8 points or more. If the Ravens are +7.0, they can lose by 6 points or less (or win outright) for your bet to cash.

  • The Moneyline: A simple bet on who will win the game. In the NFL, moneyline values can vary wildly. We help you identify “Underdog Value” where the risk-to-reward ratio is in your favor.

  • The Total (Over/Under): The combined score of both teams. Key factors like weather (wind/snow) and defensive injuries heavily influence whether an NFL game goes Over or Under.

Why Do NFL Spreads Move?

NFL odds are the most efficient market in sports. Lines move primarily due to:

  1. Injury News: A Quarterback or key Offensive Lineman missing practice can shift the line by 3+ points.

  2. Sharp Money: If professional bettors hammer one side early in the week, books will adjust the number to balance their liability.
